Welcome to the website of our two research projects, the first fully funded academic studies of amateur theatre in the UK.

Heritage & Tradition

How does amateur drama contribute to cultural heritage? How has amateur drama changed over time and in relation to changing social attitudes, demographics and new technologies?

How do amateur companies mark and celebrate their histories and traditions?

In this part of the research we will be thinking about the heritage of amateur drama and asking those involved to tell us about their companies, about what they remember about past performances . We’re interested in how companies evolve their own traditions, in how things have changed from one generation to another and in how amateur drama can contribute to the heritage of a geographical, cultural or work-based community.

If you have stories to tell, please contact us.
