I spent an afternoon in the blustery seaside town of Teignmouth on Saturday, attending part of the All-England Theatre Festival semi finals at the Carlton Theatre.
The theatre has just been approved for a large-scale refurbishment, so it was fascinating to see it just before the renovations begin.
Many thanks to national AETF secretary Ann Aplin and Western area chairman Dennis Dunford for their help on the day. It was also a pleasure to meet GoDA president Colin Dolley.
I was lucky enough to get to watch Western Division contenders Carnon Downs Drama group perform Just Hear My Voice by Caitlin Rose, and the Southern Division's Bench Theatre Company perform Grotto by Mark Wakeman. The semi-final event was adjudicated by Paul Fowler, GoDA Adjudicator.
The performances are judged using the following mark scheme:
Acting - 40%
Production - 35%
Stage Presentation - 15%
Dramatic Achievement - 10%
All in all, it was a great introduction to the world of festival competition, and a great pleasure to get to see the Carlton in its former state before the works begin on the renovated building.
